Digital fabrication course

Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia

Digital Fabrication is an essential introductory course that delves into the realm of new production techniques by examining the relationship between computer data and the materialization of designs through machines. Traditionally, the focus of the architectural discipline in relation to digital fabrication has revolved around the creation of non-standard parts/components and the exploration of form as an end in itself. However, this course aims to encourage students to think beyond form and instead explore how tools can facilitate an optimal relationship between form and function. Additionally, the course will prompt students to engage in the design/production process and foster a spirit of exploration. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to delve into three common digital fabrication processes: Laser Cutting, CNC milling, and 3D Printing. By the course's end, students should have a strong familiarity with digital modeling, fabricating, documenting, and assembling structures. Moreover, they should possess the ability to devise strategies for translating geometric concepts into articulate and constructible solutions, culminating in the production of CAD files suitable for CNC machining.
